Wingate Living plans major revitalization effort in Massachusetts

Senior living provider Wingate Living recently acquired a new community in Brewster, Massachusetts and the company is planning an extensive renovation and revitalization effort to modernize the property, according to President Alexandra Schuster.

Wingate Living acquired and renamed a 59-apartment independent living and assisted living property now known as Wingate Residences at Pleasant Bay. The full-scale renovation will bring improvements to apartments and, in later phases, to common areas to minimize resident disruption.

Upgrades will include new flooring and carpeting, newly painted interior spaces and updated kitchen finishes. Some areas of the community will also be reconfigured to allow for more open access, while additional spaces will be added to improve the usability of the community’s shared areas.

“This became a very interesting opportunity because we love to get into communities and add our value and we’ve had success renovating communities to build successful environments to help better serve older adults,” Schuster recently told Senior Housing News.

The renovation will also focus on the community’s entryway, opening up the main lobby area and taking advantage of existing views and natural light. On the project, Wingate is working with interior design firm Markel Interiors to introduce a contemporary coastal feel to the community.

“We want this community to truly reflect the unique character of the surrounding area, incorporating light-filled spaces and a natural color palette that brings the outside elements in,” Schuster said. “The most important thing is how you program the spaces and how residents use the space.”

The goal of the project is twofold: to improve aesthetics while also offering better functionality for programming. The renovation effort is expected to be completed by the end of this year, Schuster added.

Wingate operates 11 communities and most recently opened One Wingate East, a boutique independent living community in Needham, Massachusetts.

Saint Therese plans independent living expansion

Nonprofit senior living provider Saint Therese announced plans to expand its Saint Therese of Corcoran community by adding 31 new independent living apartments to the property, according to a news release.

“We have been incredibly grateful for the warm welcome we have received in Corcoran. The response to our community has exceeded expectations, and our independent living apartments filled much faster than we anticipated,” said Craig Abbott, president and CEO of Saint Therese. “While we always planned for the possibility of future growth here, we didn’t expect to be moving forward with an expansion this soon. It speaks to the need in this area and to the strong connections we have already built.”

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for later this year, with construction expected to be completed in mid-to-late 2027, the release states.

The new independent living addition will connect to the existing building through a walkway designed to promote social connection. The connecting space will include a family room, kitchen, community room, kids’ corner, outdoor game space and conservatory.

Architecture and interior design for the project will be overseen by Pope Design Group, with CBS Construction Services serving as the general contractor.

In May of last year, SHN profiled the organization’s continued growth.

Erickson Senior Living announces new construction at Florida property

Erickson Senior Living announced plans to add a fourth residential building at Emerson Lakes, a community in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, according to a news release.

Known as Pelican Cove, the fourth residential building will add 118 additional homes spanning multiple layouts with underground parking and access to the community’s overall slate of amenities.

Construction at Emerson Lakes has been in progress since 2024, starting with Sandhill Point, the community’s first residential building, which is expected to open in early 2027. Two additional buildings, Laguna Springs and Mangrove Run, are also planned to open later that year. Combined, these first residences will add 315 homes to Emerson Lakes, with Pelican Cove slated to open in late 2028.

A two-story, 50,000 square-foot clubhouse known as Coral Ridge will represent the “heart of the community” to spur social engagement and wellness with event spaces, art rooms, club rooms, a fitness center, meditation garden, resort-style pool and a spa tub. Two dining options are also available as part of the community including a cafe and reservation-based restaurant.

Erickson also recognized the opening of Belle Isle at its Siena Lakes community in Naples, Florida. The expansion of independent living on the 35-acre campus adds 67 new residences with updated kitchens and finishes.

Amenities include a swimming pool, a modern fitness center, a theater, a salon, an on-site medical center, several dining venues, outdoor dining areas, a library, resident-led clubs and walking paths.

Adaptive reuse community opens in North Carolina

The Osceola Council on Aging announced the opening of the Ford City Motor Senior Housing Complex in Salisbury, North Carolina.

The adaptive reuse project of the former Ford City Motor Building has taken three years to complete, with the historic building to hold 28 units, along with an expansion of 36 units spanning multiple layouts.

The community is planned as a 55+ community, with apartments spaced across five buildings.

The project will make use of the full footprint of the historic Ford dealership, including its expansive showroom and storage spaces. Although primary applicants must meet the age requirement, the complex will also permit secondary residents age 18 and older.

Consistent with the 55+ development model, the facility will provide coordinated support services, including communal dining, social programming, history and art activities, urban gardening, music and fitness options like yoga.

“A hallway with units on both sides leads to the former Ford Dealership showroom with large glass-panel windows that will now be the community space for the complex,” said Wendy Ford, President/CEO of the Osceola Council on Aging, the properties developer.
